Chapter Fourteen

Holly wiped the white silicone off her hands as she walked around the room and checked the art students’ progress.

“We’re going for one-eighth of an inch in thickness,” Holly said. “This will give us enough depth to press in our tiles and jewels and beads, so they don’t fall off.”

“Like this?” one of the students asked.

“Yes, that’s it.” Holly smiled at her. “Great work.”

“This is hard,” another student said, struggling to squeeze her silicone out of her tube.

Holly went over to give the young girl a hand. “This is the hardest part of making the wreathes. Once we’ve got a good layer of silicone on our wooden circles, the rest is easy and completely up to your imagination.”

She glanced over at Avery, who had already spread out her silicone with the putty knife. The small wooden wreath base was evenly covered and ready to be dressed up.

“Once you’ve got your silicone set,” Holly said, “you’re going to want to place your bigger feature items on the wreath so they don’t all end up in the same spot—unless that’s the look you’re going for.”

She walked over to Avery’s worktable and admired her placement of shiny, patterned, broken china. “Gorgeous,” Holly told her.

“Thanks, Holly,” Avery whispered back to her.

Some of the kids began chatting, others snickered as they got silicone all over their fingers. Lucy, who sat in the corner observing, gave her a thumbs-up.

The class carried on, adding their various colored flattened jewels, some beads, and glittery pearls to their mini mosaic wreathes. Some of them bragged that they were giving theirs away as a Christmas present. Others insisted they were keeping them for themselves. Avery wanted to make a second one for her grandfather.

“We’ll need to set these on the workbench to dry,” Holly said. “And Lucy will help you all next time to attach the hangers on the back.”

Once class was almost over, Lucy instructed the class to wash up and clear their workspaces.

Avery skipped over to Holly and hugged her around her waist. “Thanks, Holly. Don’t forget about the tree-lighting ceremony.”

“I’ll see you there,” Holly answered.

“Looks like you’ve got a fan,” Lucy said once Avery left the room.

“She’s kind of grown on me too.” Holly recapped the remaining tubes of silicone and placed them in a drawer.

“I’m sure it has nothing to do with who her uncle is.”

The smirk Lucy gave her caused Holly to playfully swat at her.

As they made their way to the lobby, Holly noticed Emily speaking to someone in her office. The door was closed, so she couldn’t hear them, but, through the glass window between the office and the lobby, Holly could see by the expression on Emily’s face the conversation was a serious one.

“What’s going on in there?” Holly asked Lucy in hushed tones.

“I think it’s someone interested in taking over the school.”

“Oh, really?” Holly scrutinized Emily’s face through the glass to see how the meeting was going, but she couldn’t tell. “That could be promising.”

“We’ll see.” Lucy marked some paperwork at the front desk.
